Hakkasan Hits SF's Financial District

Sophisticated Cantonese cuisine is the focus of San Francisco's Hakkasan, which opened last week on the edge of the Financial District. It's the tenth restaurant in the global chain that includes locations in New York, London and Dubai.

Guests are greeted by the wafting aroma of incense on their way to the dining room and a dramatic 25-seat V-shaped bar awash with cerulean blue light.

The rest of the elegant 10,000-square-foot restaurant is comparatively understated, with dark woods, carved room dividers and embroidered banquettes.

The large menu includes a la carte and fixed-price options ($68-$138 at dinner).
One way to start is with an umeboshi plum sour or a selection from the eclectic wine and sake list. Move on to crisp duck rolls; Assam seafood clay pot; and a delicately flavored stir-fry of lotus root, asparagus and lily bud.

Desserts include a coconut tapioca pearl pudding garnished with caramelized spiced pineapple.
