The Beauty of the Mission Murals

Mission District Murals    -   San Francisco

Balmy Alley - SF  2012

To walk the Mission District is to enjoy a visual feast of mural art. These photos show just a fraction of the almost 600 murals throughout San Francisco.
Both Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley are known for their stunning and thought-provoking images. But there's barely a block in the Mission that doesn't pop with displays adorning walls.
San Francisco and Mission murals have a rich heritage, with muralists Diego Rivera and Los Tres Grandes emblematic of this form.
Artists began painting in Balmy Alley in the 1970s, reflecting social, political and community concerns. The Clarion Alley Project (CAMP) came later, with multi-themed murals created along the Clarion corridor.
An excellent resource on the Mission's murals is Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center on 24th -- mere footsteps from Balmy Alley. Visitors can avail themselves of guided tours, a mural map, and other information.
